Mobileye announced on October 22, 2026 that safety auditor TÜV SÜD has issued an inspection certificate confirming that the supplier’s automatic emergency braking (AEB) development process conforms with ISO 21448, the international SOTIF standard for Safety of the Intended Functionality.
Details of the audit
The independent inspection reviewed Mobileye’s AEB development process and the measures used to identify, evaluate and mitigate risks that can arise even when a system is operating as designed — including sensor and perception limitations and varied real-world conditions. Mobileye said the certificate covers the company’s AEB development process only, while the assessed safety practices sit within a broader approach to driver-assistance and autonomous technologies.
Self Drive News’ bulletin summarised the scope as: auditor TÜV SÜD, standard ISO 21448 (SOTIF), and that the assessment targeted hazards resulting from performance limitations or foreseeable misuse rather than hardware or software failures.
Mobileye highlighted its long history in ADAS and noted that the TÜV SÜD certificate "provides an independent view of the rigor behind that process." The company also noted that more than 250 million vehicles worldwide have been built with Mobileye EyeQ technology.
What this means for the market
For automakers and Tier‑1 suppliers in Europe — including those with manufacturing footprints across Central and Eastern Europe — an independent SOTIF confirmation for a major ADAS supplier can reduce program risk during homologation and supplier selection. The ISO 21448 framework focuses attention on how systems behave in real-world edge cases and complements functional safety work, a growing priority as ADAS features become more capable and widespread.
OEMs that source AEB and other ADAS modules rely on robust development and validation processes to meet tightening regulatory scrutiny and customer expectations. An externally audited development process can be presented to regulators and partners as evidence of systematic risk management, which may smooth approvals and integration across vehicle platforms built in European plants.
Industry context
Mobileye has previously received TÜV SÜD recommendations related to its safety management framework for Level 4 autonomous systems, and the AEB inspection is framed by the company as part of a wider safety methodology applied across its ADAS and autonomous-business lines. Independent trade coverage noted the certificate targets the driver‑assistance side of Mobileye’s business and does not by itself certify higher‑level autonomous systems.
As ADAS content per vehicle rises across Europe, suppliers that can document disciplined, repeatable development and SOTIF‑aligned validation may gain competitive advantage when competing for production programs — including those with significant manufacturing footprints in Central and Eastern Europe.
