The European Union has launched a safeguard investigation into hybrid car imports as it moves to hold back Chinese models — and the fallout is landing squarely on South Korea's automotive industry. Seoul's carmakers fear measures such as limits on import volumes, South Korean business daily Hankyung reports, even though the probe's declared target is China.

The exposure is considerable. Figures cited by South Korean media show Hyundai Motor shipped 46,282 hybrid units to the EU, Kia 31,424, Renault Korea 10,963 and KG Mobility 3,843 — a combined 92,512 vehicles. Last year the EU accounted for 15.1% of the 612,382 hybrid cars South Korea exported, making it a market none of the four producers can afford to lose.

The investigation sits within the EU's wider “Made in Europe” industrial plan, which has unsettled the car industry well beyond China. An analysis by Deutsche Welle warns that in shielding European producers from Chinese competition, Brussels risks damaging close partners — Turkey, Morocco, Japan and South Korea — with billions of euros and hundreds of thousands of jobs at stake. Trade barriers drawn up for one competitor, the region is learning, rarely stop at the border.

Eastern European dealers and importers have practical reasons to watch the file. Should the safeguard process end in volume caps, supply of Korean-built hybrids could tighten and prices could firm long before any formal restriction takes effect, and the uncertainty alone may be enough to reshape ordering plans. The probe also adds to a trade rulebook the industry is still digesting, including the EU's 70% local-content test that has already rattled suppliers.

For buyers, the practical lesson is to compare offers across Europe before any supply squeeze reaches the showroom.
