BYD is preparing a major charging-infrastructure commitment in Romania. Speaking in Bucharest, a BYD vice president announced that the Chinese EV maker will invest "a few hundred million dollars" over the next two to three years to install several hundred ultra-fast charging stations across the country. Each station will be equipped with its own battery storage system, enabling high-power charging sessions without overloading the local grid.

The rollout begins with a pilot network of 10 to 20 flash charging stations. The rationale is clear: charging access remains the main barrier to EV adoption, and BYD prefers to tackle the problem itself rather than wait for third-party operators. Alongside the infrastructure push, the company also announced plans to work with Romanian component suppliers - a signal that it views the country not only as a sales market but as part of its European supply chain.

The Romanian program also illustrates how BYD's European charging strategy differs from its home market. In China, BYD already operates some 12,000 ultra-fast chargers and has showcased a 1,500 kW charger - but that megawatt-class technology remains stuck in European bureaucracy. Rather than building motorway-adjacent facilities from the ground up, BYD is taking the partnership route in Europe, starting the rollout at BYD and Denza dealerships before growing toward motorway locations.

The move adds to the charging momentum building across Central and Eastern Europe. Days earlier, new ultra-fast chargers with outputs of up to 400 kW entered operation on Croatia's A1 and A3 motorways, as previously reported. For Romania, where dense fast-charging corridors are still lacking, a dealer-anchored network backed by battery storage could prove decisive in convincing hesitant buyers to make the switch to electric.

For dealers and fleet buyers, the announcement carries a practical edge: an expanding charging network lowers the risk of EV ownership and strengthens the business case for electrified models - including the Chinese brands that have been steadily gaining ground in the region. Buyers weighing a switch no longer have to bet on infrastructure arriving someday; in Romania, it now has a budget and a timeline.

As charging anxiety fades, attention shifts to finding the right car at the right price, and electrified models are increasingly worth a look. Readers looking for a vehicle can find sensational cars at sensational conditions at WorldTrader24, Europe's marketplace with over 70,000 vehicles.
