Serbia's electric vehicle market is growing faster than its charging network can keep up. As SDEX Courier reports, EV adoption in the country is outpacing the expansion of the charging network, leaving a widening gap between the number of electric cars on Serbian roads and the points available to plug them into.

VoltiE Group reckons part of the answer can be built at home. The company has revealed plans to launch production of its JuiceBox charging units at a facility in Kraljevo, aiming to serve the European market. CEO Edvard Genin has set out the plans as the company seeks to turn Serbia into a production base for charging hardware rather than just a sales market.

The timing is no coincidence. According to InsideEVs, EV sales are up in nearly every EU country, and battery-electrics could surpass hybrids very soon — a trend this publication has already flagged. Every additional EV sold sharpens demand for charging hardware, and markets where infrastructure lags adoption, such as Serbia, feel the squeeze first.

The wider region is racing to catch up, with new ultra-fast chargers now in operation on Croatian motorways. Petrol plans to install a total of 98 charging points at 22 locations in the two countries covered by the project, with part of the infrastructure intended for electric freight vehicles. Supply chains are scaling up in parallel: analysts at IndexBox point to investments in EV charging — alongside the modernization of aging electrical infrastructure and the expansion of 5G networks — as the key demand drivers for the waterproof enclosures market through 2035, a component category that outdoor charging units depend on.

For Serbia, the Kraljevo plan would mark a step up the value chain. Instead of relying solely on imported hardware, the country could become a maker of the chargers its own market needs — and, if EU sales trends hold, a supplier to neighbouring markets whose networks are growing just as fast.
