Bulgaria is stepping up its bid to consolidate its position as a transport and logistics hub linking Europe, the Western Balkans and the Black Sea region, Transport Minister Georgi Peev told the Sofia Economic Forum. Sofia is backing that ambition with 25 projects to strengthen connectivity between the Black Sea and the Aegean, a push that reinforces the country's role as a transit point between the two seas and the wider European market.
The infrastructure drive now has an industrial counterpart. At its Tech Day in Milan, Great Wall Motor (GWM) confirmed that its European production will be located in Bulgaria, where the compact Ora 5 SUV is set to be assembled from early 2027. Production is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2027 under an agreement with a local partner, with annual capacity of up to 50,000 vehicles.
The announcement builds on previously reported plans for GWM to roll out ten models in Bulgaria within two years, and it names the Ora 5 as the first model with a concrete start date and capacity figure. For a Chinese automaker targeting Europe, locating assembly inside the EU rather than exporting from China marks a strategic shift in how its vehicles reach the region's dealers and buyers.
For trade and logistics operators, the two developments reinforce each other. Upgraded Black Sea-Aegean corridors strengthen Bulgaria's case as a distribution base serving Central Europe, the Western Balkans and the Black Sea region, while local assembly gives vehicle flows into the EU a shorter and more predictable path. Dealers and importers across Eastern Europe will be watching what Bulgarian production means for the availability and pricing of Chinese-brand vehicles in the region.
As freight corridors and production lines converge on Bulgaria, the practical effect for the trade is a wider, faster-moving vehicle market — from vans and trucks for hauliers riding the new routes to the passenger models soon to be assembled in the region.
