The question now echoing through Slovakia's automotive sector is an uncomfortable one: what happens to Volkswagen's Slovak operations if Audi SUV production moves to the United States? Reports that the carmaker could relocate Audi SUV output across the Atlantic have triggered warnings from opposition politicians and put the future of one of the country's flagship industrial sites under scrutiny — with no reassuring answer yet in sight.

At the centre of the storm is Volkswagen's plant in Bratislava, where Audi SUVs roll off the line. According to Slovak media, relocating that production to the US could seriously hit the site. And the reshuffling may not end there: Volkswagen also operates a plant in Martin in central Slovakia, and the carmaker plans to transfer the Martin facility to MAN, the group's truck maker, as part of a sale inside the Volkswagen Group — a double restructuring that could redraw the carmaker's Slovak footprint within a few years.

The political reaction has been swift. Opposition politicians have warned openly of a potential Audi production shift to the USA, pressing the government for answers, while the Economy Ministry has stressed continuity, saying it has been holding long-term discussions with the group's management on broader plans and the future of production in Slovakia — including opportunities to expand production capacity. The message from Bratislava is that the talks are not only about defending what exists, but about winning what comes next.
