Corrections Policy
We aim to get it right the first time. When we do not, here is exactly how we fix it.
Our Commitment
A mistake that is corrected quickly and visibly costs a newsroom less trust than one that is discovered later by readers. We therefore correct promptly, note every change on the article itself, and keep a public record of what we changed and why.
How Corrections Appear
- On the article: any material change to a published story is marked with a visible correction note at the top of the article, stating the date and what was changed.
- In the transparency log: every correction above the minor level is recorded in our public corrections log at [corrections log link], including the article title, date, description of the change and its level.
Levels of Correction
- Clarification: the original text was accurate but could be misread; we add context to remove ambiguity without changing facts.
- Correction: a factual error (figure, name, date or attribution) has been fixed and the change is noted on the article and in the log.
- Retraction: the central claim of the story no longer stands; we state that clearly at the top of the article, keep it online for the record, and explain what we now know.
Minor Fixes
Small wording, spelling or punctuation fixes do not require a visible note on the article; they are still recorded internally and summarized in the monthly entry of the transparency log.
Tell Us About an Error
If you spot something that looks wrong, write to desk@eastautonews.com with a link to the article and a short description. We check every correction request against our sources and reply within two business days with what we found and what we are doing about it.
