Eastern Europe is emerging as the fastest-growing region in Europe for both electric vehicle adoption and DC charging deployment, according to a new report by gridX. The study highlights a broader shift in the European charging market, which is moving from rapid expansion towards high-power optimisation. While the Netherlands continues to lead the continent in battery-electric fleet penetration at 24%, the growth story is increasingly being written further east.
The build-out is being underpinned by major institutional financing. An initiative supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) covering eastern Europe and the Baltic states will install and operate 7,400 new EV charging stations by 2028, in addition to the 900 stations it already operates — a significant expansion of the charging infrastructure currently available in those countries.
Other development financiers are active in the region as well. Network operator Eleport is receiving a €35 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) that will bring hundreds of new electric-vehicle charging stations to Central and Eastern European countries. The EBRD, meanwhile, is boosting EV charging in central Europe, where GreenWay — a charge point operator incorporated in Poland — ranks among the fastest-growing charge point operators in central and eastern Europe.
Notably, the new capacity is not only about quantity. An analysis by the European Alternative Fuels Observatory (EAFO) shows that Slovakia, Croatia and the Czech Republic already record significant recharging power per point, forming a cluster of countries investing in high-capacity charging. For regional dealers and fleet buyers, denser coverage combined with higher-power hardware strengthens the commercial case for electric vehicles across the region.
Against this backdrop, sourcing the right EV stock becomes the next priority for the trade.
